Activity Ideas for Body Parts
Brain Dance
• Do the Brain Dance and discuss which body parts are used for each pattern.
Movement Activities
• Sing actions songs that use body parts such as “Head and Shoulders”, “ Toe Knee Chest Nut” or “Clap your Hands”.
• Dancing Body Parts. Play music and start moving one body part. Then try a different body part. Try dancing each body part by itself. Then start adding dancing body parts together until the whole body is dancing.
• My Shadow. Tell your child they are going to be your shadow and must copy everything you do. Start with simple body part movements (wiggling fingers, stomping feet, etc.) For younger children give them verbal cues along with the movements. For older children add challenge by moving in silence.
• Body Parts Freeze. Play a piece of music. Pause the music and call out a body part. Have your child touch that body part to the floor or wall. Or to foster social/emotional relationships when body part is called out have your child touch that body part to your same body part.
Other Activities
• Play doctor with your child and examine different body parts talking about they way they look, move, and how they work. Takes turn being the doctor or the patient.
• With a large piece of paper trace your child's body. After work together drawing in all the parts of their body. For older children trace their body twice and do one picture of their external body parts and then one of their internal body parts.
• Talk to your child about their 5 senses (touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound). Baking is a great activity that encompasses all these senses.
• Look at books with different animals. Talk to your child about the differences between animal and human body parts.
