I sit here late on Sunday night, my sweet 11 day old Malia curled up on my chest, my newly decorated Christmas tree glowing beside me, my wonderful husband playing with his new obsession (his iPhone) on the couch beside me, just having finished replying to work emails for the day (the reality of a work(aholic) from home mom). Although I am tempted to just dive into the Christmas baking that I spent most of the day making with Bria (my 2 and a half year old) I promised myself I would finally take the dive and start this blog.
I sat here for a few minuted trying to figure out an intelligent, creative, insightful way to start my blog. Something that would seem professional and educated yet sensitive and relatable. Something dynamic! Something meaningful…But after 10 minutes of staring at a blank screen, knowing my 2 hour window before having to nurse Malia was quickly coming to an end, I realized the best this sleep deprived, working at 11 days post-partum (no maternity leave for the self employed…more on that later), somewhat emotional, new mom of two could handle was to just try and write some (hopefully) grammatically correct, coherent sentences that adequately express what I hope this blog to do. (Adequate! Definitely a word I am using and embracing a lot more lately LOL!)
I have a few goals for this blog. When I first told Chris (my personal technical “guru” hubby) that I wanted to add a blog on our website it was so I could include more information on dance, early childhood development, and education for my clients as an extension of the topics I briefly try to touch on in class (as briefly as you can with 15-20 toddlers running around a studio ready to dance!). Dance, music, and education are my passions and I wanted the opportunity to share some amazing research and ideas I have found in these areas with my clients.
Thinking about the mission of J’Adore Dance, I decided I also wanted to include posts in my blog that were focused on health, fitness, and of course something most moms can relate to, weight loss. In my journey over the past 2 years starting J’Adore Dance I have had my own struggles and triumphs in these areas. I first started my business working towards my fitness and weight goals a few months after the birth of Bria and now 2 years later am starting that journey again after my second pregnancy. I have also been fortunate enough to share in the journey of many other women in my classes as we all reach for the same goals, getting fit and heathy in a fun way while dealing with the challenges of the real world. So some of my posts will focus on general health and fitness information as well as sharing my own post-partum weight loss/fitness journey. My hope is that I will give my readers something they can relate to as well as inspire them on their own journey.
Finally, I want to help expose the truth behind the “supermom” phenomenon. So many times I have heard from friends, family members and clients ” I don’t know how you do it all.” Well the truth is, I really don’t and never will. As much as that bothers the perfectionist, A type part of me I think one of the greatest realizations I have come to over the past two years is that there is no such thing as a “perfect” or “super” mom (you should see my house the day before the cleaning company comes every two weeks, definitely looks like a war zone! Although some days parenting a toddler and running a business from home does seem a bit like going into battle). I hope these sections of my blog can provide a sometimes humorous, sometimes sorrowful, sometimes frustrated but always realistic look at what being a mom/parent is all about, break down some urban mom myths, and maybe once and a while inspire us all to stop and enjoy the little moments that make it all worth while.
